In the often hectic daily school routine, moments of calm and reflection are particularly valuable. This is precisely where the ‘break times’ come in, which we organised for Years 11, 12 and 13 together with pupils from Years 5 to 7. The aim of these breaks is to give the children the opportunity to consciously switch off, recharge their batteries and become more aware of themselves.
Our group focused intensively on the topic of mindfulness. Through short exercises, the pupils were able to learn how to direct their attention specifically to the present moment. A key component was mindful listening: noticing sounds, enduring silence and concentrating on one’s own breathing. It was particularly lovely to observe how focused and open the pupils were as they engaged with and took part in the activities.
In addition to mindfulness, there were other exciting activities during the break sessions, which offered the children different ways to relax and become more self-aware. The break sessions demonstrated how important it is to consciously create spaces for calm and reflection within the school day. They make a valuable contribution to enhancing the pupils’ well-being.
We would like to extend our special thanks to Ms Sander, who has actively supported us throughout the planning process.
