How can students at the Georgianum who are interested in medical topics further their education?
That is exactly what the School First Aid Club is for. This club offers us students the opportunity to learn about first aid so that we can provide assistance during breaks and at school events.
Following a hiatus in the club due to the coronavirus pandemic, the School First Aid Service is now being relaunched. This summer, interested pupils from Year 10 upwards were invited to a kick-off event. Interest was high: 24 pupils signed up to take part.
Our school fair in August provided an early highlight, as the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) attended with an ambulance to provide first aid in case of an emergency. We participants were given a detailed tour of the ambulance, which gave us a first impression of the duties of a paramedic.
We continued with weekly meetings at school, where we started with the basics of first aid. In the following weeks, we attended an intensive
weekend course run by the DLRG, led by Thomas Osterbrink. There, we learnt a great deal for our paramedic assistant exams: how the human anatomy is structured, the possible causes of cardiac arrest, how to use resuscitation equipment, and much more.
Armed with this knowledge, we then sat the theory exam and, a week later, the practical exam. Despite the challenge, all of us passed the exam in the end. On 17 December 2025, we received our training certificates from our headteacher, Mr Sieberg.
But this is just the start of the school first-aid service. Next year, in addition to our training, we will receive further lessons on first aid, where we will practise case studies to ensure we are prepared for emergencies. A new room is also being set up where we can store our equipment. This will enable us to be available again during breaks for pupils who have injured themselves.
We are looking forward to the coming weeks and to putting our newly acquired knowledge to good use, and we would like to thank Mr Osterbrink (DLRG Lingen branch) and Dr Kaufhold for organising this course.
We would also like to thank the Friends of Georgianum Grammar School for their financial support.
