When sport meets books – SPORT MEETS DEUTSCH delights Year 5 pupils

19. April 2026

"If you don't eat your veg, God gets angry with you? Exactly. But God doesn't give a damn whether I like veg or not. If he punished you for something like that, he’d be a right idiot. And he isn’t an idiot. Most people were lucky if they knew a bit about the little world they lived in. Anna discovered a myriad of different worlds.”

Just like Anna, here in Fynn’s book *Hello, Mr God, this is Anna* and read aloud by Mr Glosemeyer, the children also offered deep insights into very different children’s worlds and children’s books. And through games, dances and relay races, the ‘Sport meets Deutsch’ event provided plenty of sporting variety.

A total of 30 Year 5 pupils had signed up. After a short Powerball tournament, all the children presented their favourite book in small groups. They asked questions and shared their thoughts. The books were very different: crime novels, adventure stories and the book “Volltreffer” from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series were all there. The children’s eyes lit up as they were allowed to present their books to the others. And not just there. The organisers, led by Marion Langeborg, Martin Glosemeyer and Anja Pothen, had come up with a cool dance routine and even joined in themselves at the end. “That was the highlight of the evening for me,” said Glosemeyer, who was particularly impressed by the variety on offer and the entertaining evening it made for. And, of course, by the snack buffet, to which all the children contributed and were allowed to help themselves to treats time and again.

Between the reading sessions, during which the teachers gave a glimpse into their books, there were further little games. An evening to remember. After all, who wouldn’t want to spend a Saturday evening in the sports hall? And then with a combination that seems unusual at first glance: reading and playing sport.
